Mushrooms

about

Mushrooms (2008), created in collaboration with Mia Orozco (dance) and Bo Bell (interactive visuals), is an interactive dance, video, and music composition based on Sylvia Plath's recitation of her poem Mushrooms. The piece begins with a playback of the recording of the poem with an accompanying melody. This melody is based on a mapping of each syllable's vowel sound to a pitch. The remainder of the piece uses the speech and melody duet as a sample playback source. The dancer's movement controls the triggering of samples.

The version of the piece presented here was performed live by Salman Bakht on June 8, 2009 at the University of California, Santa Barbara using a MIDI controller in place of the interactive dance component. The piece is realized using a modified version of the CONFETTI granulator developed by Salman Bakht.
