Ere Wyrm (for mountain dulcimer) is a collection of four instrumental pieces, each in a distinct musical style although built from the same harmonic idea.

(1) In “a dulcet murmur,” I combined recorded mountain dulcimer improvisation with percussion made from sampled dulcimer sounds (and a tiny bit of speech) to form a mellow but uptempo electronic dance music track.

(2) “du midi,” unlike the other Ere Wyrm pieces, does not contain recorded mountain dulcimer and is instead made only with sequenced digital instruments. Although growing out of mountain dulcimer improvisation, as it repeatedly played in my mind, the piece transformed into an alternative/electronic rock performance inspired by the sounds of Cocteau Twins and Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine.

(3) “l'appel haché,” is a drone piece containing 21 recordings of mountain dulcimer, reversed, time-stretched, and played simultaneously.

(4) “près des roues à l'aube” is a contemporary-folk-inspired piece consisting of recorded and arranged mountain dulcimer improvisations combined with field recordings of the waterwheels on the Rue des Teinturiers in Avignon, France, which I made in 2011.
