Seedlings is a collection of four are heavily-edited digital piano improvisations and two soundscape compositions.

I created the improvisation-based pieces in the same order as they are heard on the album and thus the album follows my progress improvising on the piano over the last 8 months, starting a few weeks after I started playing the piano. All of these pieces were recording in MIDI (rather than audio), allowing some of the improvised performance to be played on various instruments in addition to piano.

“Late December 2022” is short piano piece with heavily distorted synths layered on top.

“Solar Revolt I, II” is a two movement piece featuring glitch-based synths and effects in addition to piano improvisation. In the first movement, I added the glitch effects after the piano improvisation was recorded and arranged, with glitch parameter automation improvised on a MIDI fader controller. In the second movement, I recorded the piano improvisations over the glitch synths.

“Seedlings (en face)” is much more stripped-down piano improvisation, with only subtle synth string accompaniment.

“Eras” is a four-movement piece for piano, flutes, and marimba, although the parts for all of the instruments are based on digital piano improvisation, typically with the flute and marimba parts added after the piano part was recorded.

The two soundscape compositions are made of field recordings of the two locations listed in the titles.

“Bridgeport, Alabama” uses recordings made while walking on a pedestrian bridge over the Tennessee River.

“Salt Springs, Florida” uses recordings made near a lake over a few mornings in December.

The album ends with “quieter” versions of the first two pieces on the album, with subtler synths and effects.
