Dakar fields / vraiment rien is a collection of pieces composed of field recordings I made while living in Dakar, Senegal in late 2019.

The first and third pieces, “Gorée (trois paysages)” and “Mermoz, Dakar (un portrait),” could be considered as soundscape compositions (www.sfu.ca/~truax/scomp.html) since each presents recorded sound recognizable as originating from specific locations (mentioned in the titles). However, these pieces maintain the recognizability of not only their sonic environments but also the field recordings themselves. Each of these pieces consists of multiple minutes-long field recordings, with minimal editing, presented in sequence. There is very little layering of recordings, and most of the crossfades are quite obtrusive. My hope is that the listener does not imagine the pieces as the result of hidden electronic transformations but instead accepts that, beyond the obvious, I have done truly (almost) nothing.

The second piece, “The most painful auditory experience of my life,” contains recordings of a religious event that occurred immediately outside of my residence and lasted throughout the night. My experience of the event, as the title suggests, was extremely unpleasant due to its loudness and duration. In this piece, I aim to convey the unparalleled pain of the experience but in such a way that is only a little painful. Ten field recordings from throughout that night are used in this piece, although in contrast to the other pieces on this album, the recordings are overlapped, forming an incomprehensible sonic whole.
