Performance System 3 – Townline contains two recorded mandolin performances, played (approximately) simultaneously. The composition consists of a tuning and a sequence of 11 sections, each of which defines the set of strings and fingering position, and thus a set of pitches, to be played. For the first recording/performance, the duration of each section is undefined. The durations in the second recording/performance match those in the first.
The performer sounds some or all of the appropriate strings, simultaneously or in rapid succession. This action is repeated many times for each section, with some sort of variation (pitches played, order, timing) between each instance. Rhythmic uniformity should be avoided. In the first performance, the mandolin was struck by swung earphones, thus limiting performance control. (In the second performance, a standard pick was used.)
Ideally, the two recordings should be played through different playback devices, so that the precise timing, loudness, and spatial relationships between the recordings may vary. Three versions are provided here to simulate this subtle variation. Each version contains a full performance of the work. Thus, the tracks need not be played in succession.
Low Neon Triad, contains a field recording and sustained sine tones. The set of pitches used in this work combines those used in Performance System 3 – Townline and Townline Sessions.
